Updates for the internets
Sometimes I forget about the old blog. Between emails I send to 'real life' friends, Facebook, and Instagram I sort of feel like everyone knows about how my first day at work went but alas, I suppose there are hundreds more of you out there just DYING to know, right? At least, that is what my blog stats tell me:)
So Monday was shockingly WONDERFUL. I mean, literally both kids couldn't have done much better at Lori's. First of all, Cecelia slept for seven hours in a row the night before and then I had to freaking wake her up at 7 am after that to start getting the show on the road. Little stinker knew she had to rest up for her big day! I was so incredibly nervous and anxious about the prospect of her freaking out, not taking the bottle, etc etc etc. But the morning went smooth and I got both kids to Lori's on time (score one for this working mom---it's seriously such a feat to get anywhere with two kids at 8am). I told Lori that I was totally fine coming on my lunch break to nurse Cecelia if needed because apparently if she doesn't eat enough from bottles during the day, she might totally lose her mind later on (a la Thursday). When I called at lunch, however, Lori said CC was doing great and already had 3 oz and had taken two naps. THANK YOU GOD! When I picked the kids up at 4 they were both super happy and get this: little miss drank 8 ounces total of milk in the 8 hours she was there. I mean, what?! Amazing. Lori said it wasn't easy and CC was pretty pissed about it, but she didn't melt down. I'm still floored and keep praying that this continues.
Truman did great and didn't have any more fluke accidents there. He informed me on the way home that he watched after his baby sister and 'she cried a little, but not a lot'. Lori also said that Truman was very protective over CC, and if any other kids came up to her Truman would say, 'That is MY sister.' Sigh.
That evening at home before Nate was there was just fine, too (!!). Cecelia didn't cry on the way home in the car (maybe a first for the past few weeks?), she nursed and fell asleep, and then only after that little cat nap did she get a little tweaky. For about 30 minutes she was really mad and overtired but she finally calmed down and went to bed for me. She was up after a measly 4 hours and then nursed a ton after that, but I'm totally down with it for now. I just can't believe she took bottles at daycare and then was relatively happy all evening. Again: Thank you, God!
My day at work was a little mind-boggling. I won't go into details but basically my patients were all REALLY sick and really needy and totally overwhelming. Maybe it was just my luck to get the intense patients my first day back, or maybe I'm just soft. But wow, my head was killing me after that day and I had to stay up until 10 pm doing paperwork from it all. I'm hoping I get into my groove soon and can keep the paperwork at home time to a minimum. I love my job to death and the flexibility is priceless, but having to do any sort of work at home is always irritating to me.
I work Mon, Wed, and Thurs this week and next...then it's Labor day week, then we fly out for a wedding in Colorado (another blog post at some point, because OMG--we are leaving the kids at home and I'm totally freaking/excited about it!). So the first month of my return to work is going to be a little wonky with the days but I know I can manage. It actually felt really good to use my PT brain again. And the day FLEW by. I hope it continues to be a great balance for me, but so far so good.
And now for some pictures.
Our big morning! Go, Team!
And that evening, when everything seemed almost too good to be true. And too cute not to take pictures.
Also? Miss Cecelia is 12 weeks old, and almost 3 months old, too. I will do a proper 3 month post to talk all about her, of course, but please observe these awesome comparisons between my children. I cannot get enough of these types of photos. Last weekend I dug around in Truman's clothes bins to find a few sleepers that aren't TOO boyish that CC can wear. I found this cute brown one, but of course I did not find the matching ice cream hat. It just makes me smile to see both of my babes in the same outfit, though!
And sticking to the original theme of this post, here is a comparison of my first day back to work with Truman at 12 weeks and then with Cecelia at 12 weeks. Definitely did not plan to have the same exact pose and the same shirt in a different color. Also? Glad that I had better lighting this time---HATE that florescent color from the first time around!
One day down. Hope the rest of the week goes well on all fronts. So thankful that the first day was painless, and now I feel ready for this next chapter in our lives. Working mother of two kids? I guess that's me!

Day in the Life Heads up for Spring 2015
The fabulous Laura at Navigating the Mothership is passing her Day in the Life baton to yours truly. I'm happy to continue her tradition of rounding up various bloggers, asking them to document a single day in their lives, then posting links for all to read. Consider it a glimpse into the daily details that tend to fade away as time marches on. In other words: super interesting although it may seem super boring in theory. It's not and I love it!
The details:
I will continue doing these quarterly: January, April, July, and October. To keep things simple and so that I have a more solid time frame in mind, I will plan to post the reminder at the beginning of those months. You will the first fourteen days of those months to capture your day. You can email me your link and preferred picture by the 16th. I will plan to have the posts linked up on my blog by the 20th.
So any time from today until April 14th you should record your day in detail.
It can be as specific or as general as you want. I personally tend to record these days as a note in my phone, including specific times of day as I'm psychotic with details. Totally not necessary for you to do the same, as simple is probably better and means it's less overwhelming! I try to jot down quotes from the kids, to mention my thoughts as things are happening, and to keep track of the nitty gritty details in a day. I would probably remember enough if I just sat down and tried to type it all a day or two later but I don't trust my mommy brain *that* much. So a note on my phone is a must for me.
Snap pictures as you go along, the easiest method being with your phone but if you are feeling extra energetic, a 'fancy' camera also works for a post like this. Sometimes just taking a screen shot of your phone to remember the time of day, or an email you read, the weather forecast, et cetera is helpful as you write up the posts. I also like the seemingly random pictures of messy houses, meals, receipts, pets, the scenery from your parking lot spot, your house, and so on. Making collages for your pictures is helpful when it's difficult to choose which images to post (always a serious issue for me). Again, get as detailed or as general as you want with the pictures, but I think the mundane details are what makes these posts interesting. Don't forget to get pictures of YOU in this post, either. Get your friends and family involved. Maybe purchase a selfie stick (I secretly want one) but step in front of the camera for this post.
My method is that I just email myself the iPhone 'note' from the day, and then I paste it into my blog post as a foundation. I'll go back and clean it up, elaborate on thoughts/events, and make sure it's written in English instead of just abbreviations from my note. Then I will add the pictures after that. Whatever method works for you though, as there are many ways to write about a single day in your life!
It's a lot of fun to read back on my own posts, and it's also quite entertaining to read everyone else's day. If you want to play along this quarter, here is what to do:
-record any day from now until April 14th. Type it up and turn it into a blog post. You can do it!
-email me the following (to mylifeintransitionblog at gmail dot com) by April 16th: your blog title, your location, the link to your post, and please attach the file of the photo you want to be featured in the round up post. (This is different than how Laura did it, but I'm trying to make this more streamlined to save me some time).
-I will post everyone's link and picture on April 20th here on my blog.
I love reading these posts from women all around the world, and encourage you to try it even if you aren't a blogger. And it's definitely not just for mommy bloggers, either! You could turn these posts into a photo book, you could let them live online if you have a blog, or you could just look back on them and reminisce about the glory days once life settles down a bit more (ha!). Laura also records an entire week during one of these quarterly sessions, something I've never tackled before, but maybe someday. I know she makes those posts into a photo album book and her family is going to greatly appreciate the time it took to record every day events.
So pick your day (or week) and get to it!

Raced for the Cure
3.1 miles walked
$3.3 million dollars raised
And one of the best events I've ever attended.

Please check out this link to an awesome slideshow, made by the St. Louis Post Dispatch on STL Today.com. If you don't feel moved after watching it, there might be something wrong with you. Here are some stills from that same slideshow:

And now for my own personal pictures:) This is going to be a long post, so settle in for the long haul.
Me with Hannah and her mom, Ann, who has just completed 8 rounds of chemotherapy. She gets to wear the pink 'survivor' shirt to the race while the rest of us 'supporters' wore white shirts.
We walked down to the race from Hannah's place, because we knew parking would be a nightmare. Look at the glorious day we had downtown! And I'll never get enough Arch pictures, especially with sunshine like this.
With 60,000+ people you KNOW it was a great place for people watching. Look at this hot pink dog!
Look again. Someone seriously dyed their poodle pink in honor of breast cancer awareness. I think Henry would look fabulous in pink, don't you?
So here is part of our team Wilkie's Warriors. We donned the gray "Attitude is Everything" shirts for this occasion, even though I think Keri should have sported her pink survivor shirt. Do we look ready to walk?
I had to snap some pics of me and Lindsey even though we were sweaty beasts before 9 a.m. Oh how I missed St. Louis humidity!

And here I am with our girl! I think the pink bandanna is quite becoming, don't you?

We began the walk, which was pure chaos because of the sheer number of participants. Then all of a sudden we heard everyone gasp. They started taking pictures like this:
Why, you ask? When we came up over the hill this is what we saw. Click on the picture to get the full effect:
A sea of people all supporting the same cause. All touched by breast cancer. All fighting for the cure. It literally gave me goosebumps to see thousands of people united for a cause. Here is Keri's little sister Lynsey, Keri, our friend from college Mike and his wife Emily. They came all the way from Dallas, Texas for the race!

You know you are in St. Louis when you walk by an Imo's pizza parlor!! Love this picture.

I couldn't help but get a little emotional as we walked by these types of signs. Many of them said, "In honor of" or "In memory of" with names, then birth dates to death dates. Pictures of loved ones carried on participants' backs. I know there were many smiling angels looking down on St. Louis this day.

There were even Harley biker dudes waving and cheering for us. They were so cute I had to snap another picture:)
And some of the outfits were awesome. For instance, a pink hula skirt!
Then there was Lindsey's back sweat. I felt it was appropriate to include in this post, even if she gets mad at me. :)

As we rounded the corner we passed right by SLU---where we all went to college. Here we are on Compton avenue, one of the sketchier areas on campus, but you can still see College Church's steeple. It was only fitting to pose here, right?
This one is way better, lots of pretty buildings in the background and a nice little pond. So THAT is where all of my college tuition went....to keep up SLU's gorgeous grounds!
Our two survivors, Ann and Keri, trading chemo stories. It was so special to see them meet and bond, I had to be the creep with the camera:)

This is my take on an artsy balloon shot with Keri and Michael underneath. Didn't turn out quite like I wanted but oh well.

After the race some of us headed out to Llywelyn's Pub in Webster to re-fuel our bellies. Can I just say that the grilled cheese is to die for? Seriously.

And the real pearl of the whole day? The fact that Kabance Photo was there to snap a 'Party Pic' at the finish line!
You only understand the irony once I explain that Kabance was the company hired to capture our college party life moments. They were at every date dash, Greek event, and I believe even graduation. We'd hop online after a night out to see what kind of debauchery presented itself in pictures. And now? Here they were capturing a grown up moment shared by college alums, standing a few feet from our university. Life is funny sometimes, isn't it?I know this post is already really long, but I just want to share a few thoughts, so hang in there!
The weekend could not have been better. I got to spend quality time with amazing girlfriends, we had perfect sunny weather, I ran the 6 mile loop in Forest Park [my old stomping grounds!], enjoyed lots of yummy food, and I left feeling refreshed. Trips back to St. Louis always make me nostalgic and a little sad, but this time I can honestly say I only felt happiness. It was a special weekend, and I'm incredibly grateful that I was able to attend the Race for the Cure.
I know everyone has the same question: How is Keri doing?
Well, first of all she is the most adorable bald girl ever. Who knew that underneath all of that curly hair was a tiny little head? I mean it's TINY. And perfectly shaped, without any weird birthmarks or anything, so she pulls off the G.I. Jane look without missing a beat. Although I love her wigs and scarves, the bald head is my favorite. It just makes me want to rub it but I restrained myself from petting my friend. That would be a little odd, no?
She also seems more like herself now, compared to the last time I saw her [right after the first chemo]. Correct me if I'm wrong, Keri, but I think St. Louis makes her a happy girl. Lots of smiles, laughter, and a little more bounce in her step again. She's Keri again, not that she ever lost herself, but I'm hoping that the worst is behind her. I'm so excited to see what her bright future holds and I can't wait to share many more happy memories together.
We got to spill our guts during some classic girl talk sessions. Man, I missed those. They ended with laughing so hard we were crying and barely breathing. Even with Keri's dried out tears we managed to crack ourselves up, just like old times. There is nothing like divulging too much personal information to a best friend, over-analyzing boys and relationships, and reminiscing about the good old days.
So did anyone else attend the Race? I kept my eyes out for some familiar faces but didn't see any. I'd love to attend the Milwaukee Race but I'll be at a wedding in St. Louis that weekend. I highly recommend going to any and everyone affected by breast cancer in some way. You will not be disappointed.
And with that I am off to bed, with visions of pink shirts and smiling faces dancing in my head:)
